    Are These Symptoms Familiar?

Phimosis symptoms are more common than many patients realise, and often go unaddressed due to embarrassment or uncertainty about whether they warrant medical attention. See a urologist if you are experiencing:

    • A foreskin that cannot retract fully or causes discomfort when pulled back
    • Pain or swelling during urination or erection
    • Pain or burning sensation when passing urine
    • Cracks, tears, or bleeding around the foreskin
    • Redness or inflammation under the foreskin

    What is Phimosis?

Phimosis is a condition where the foreskin of the penis is too tight to be retracted over the head of the penis. It may be present from birth — known as physiological phimosis — or develop later in life due to scarring, inflammation, or skin conditions, known as pathological phimosis.

Physiological phimosis in young children often resolves naturally with age. In teenagers and adults, phimosis that causes symptoms, pain, difficulty urinating, recurring infections, or discomfort during sexual activity generally warrants medical assessment and treatment.

    Conditions Related to Phimosis

    • Paraphimosis

A condition where the foreskin, once retracted, cannot be returned to its original position. This can restrict blood flow to the head of the penis and requires prompt medical attention.

    • Balanitis

Inflammation of the foreskin and head of the penis is often caused by bacterial or fungal infection, poor hygiene, or skin conditions. Recurrent episodes may be linked to underlying phimosis.

    • Balanitis Xerotica Obliterans (BXO)

A chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes the foreskin to harden and narrow progressively over time. It is the most common medical reason for circumcision in adults and teenagers, and does not resolve without treatment.

Dr Azhari will conduct a thorough assessment to identify the specific condition and recommend the most appropriate management approach.

    Step 5 — Recovery and Follow-Up Plan

You will leave with clear aftercare instructions and a scheduled follow-up appointment to monitor healing.

    Recovery & Aftercare

    First Few Days

Mild soreness and swelling are common and expected. Take prescribed pain relief as directed. Keep the area clean and dry as instructed. Avoid strenuous activity.

    First Two Weeks

Most patients return to light daily activities within a few days. Avoid swimming and sexual activity until cleared by Dr Azhari at your follow-up review. Full recovery from surgical treatment typically takes one to two weeks.

    Follow-up Appointment

A scheduled review is arranged to confirm proper healing and ensure the treated area is comfortable and healthy.

    Treatment Options

The appropriate management approach depends on the severity of the phimosis, the underlying cause, and your individual circumstances. Dr Azhari will recommend the most suitable option following a full assessment.

    Tight Painful Foreskin-Treatment-Topical Steroid Cream

    Topical Steroid Cream

A non-surgical first-line option for mild to moderate phimosis. Applied regularly to the tight area of the foreskin, steroid cream may gradually improve elasticity and allow retraction over time. Most suitable for cases without significant scarring or infection.

    Tight Painful Foreskin-Treatment-Foreskin-Preserving Surgery

    Foreskin-Preserving Surgery (Preputioplasty)

A minor surgical procedure that widens the foreskin opening without removing it entirely. Suitable for patients where the foreskin is functional but the opening is too narrow. Performed under local anaesthesia as a day procedure.

    Tight Painful Foreskin-Treatment-Laser Circumcision

    Laser Circumcision

For cases where circumcision is the most appropriate management option, laser circumcision uses laser technology to remove the foreskin with precision, resulting in less bleeding, minimal scarring, and a faster recovery compared to traditional surgical methods. Performed under local anaesthesia. Most patients return home the same day.

Circumcision is recommended when other approaches are not suitable or have not been effective. Dr Azhari will explain all available options and confirm the most appropriate approach for your situation following assessment. Individual results and recovery timelines may vary.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to book a consultation?

No referral is required. You may contact the clinic directly to arrange an appointment. If your insurance provider requires a referral for claims purposes, our team will advise accordingly

How soon can I get an appointment if I am in discomfort?

Same-day appointments are available. Contact the clinic directly and the team will secure the earliest available slot.

Can phimosis go away on its own?

While some urinary changes occur with age, frequent urination, pain, blood in the urine, and loss of bladder control are not symptoms to accept as normal. Many are treatable conditions with effective management options.

    Will I need surgery?

Physiological phimosis in young children often resolves naturally with age. In teenagers and adults, phimosis that is causing symptoms is unlikely to resolve without treatment and warrants a medical assessment.

Are there non-surgical treatments for phimosis?

Yes. Topical steroid cream is a recognised non-surgical option for mild to moderate cases. Dr Azhari will assess whether this is appropriate for your specific situation during consultation.

When is circumcision necessary for phimosis?

Circumcision is recommended when non-surgical options have not been effective, when there is significant scarring such as BXO, or when recurrent infections or functional difficulties are present. Dr Azhari will confirm whether it is the appropriate approach following assessment.

What is laser circumcision, and how is it different from traditional circumcision?

Laser circumcision uses laser technology instead of a conventional scalpel. This allows for more precise tissue removal, reduced bleeding, and minimal scarring compared to traditional methods.

    Is phimosis treatment painful?

Local anaesthesia is used to ensure the procedure is as comfortable as possible. Most patients report mild soreness in the days following treatment, which is managed with prescribed pain relief.

How long does the procedure take?

Most procedures are completed within 20 to 30 minutes. Patients are typically able to return home the same day.

When can I return to school, work, or sport?

Most patients return to light daily activities within a few days. Strenuous activity and sport should be avoided until cleared by Dr Azhari at your follow-up review.

Will treatment affect sexual function or sensitivity?

Dr Azhari will discuss this in detail during your consultation based on your specific condition and the treatment approach recommended. Individual outcomes may vary.

Is phimosis treatment Medisave or insurance claimable?

Yes, for medically indicated cases. Coverage depends on your specific plan and procedure. Our team will clarify this before treatment begins.
