Testicular cancer develops when cells in the testicle grow abnormally and form a tumour. The testicles are the male reproductive organs located in the scrotum. They produce sperm and testosterone (the primary male sex hormone).
This cancer typically affects one testicle. In rare cases, both may be involved. It most commonly occurs in men between 15 and 44 years of age.
Testicular cancer accounts for a small percentage of all male cancers. When detected early, treatment outcomes can be favourable. Modern treatments can provide positive outcomes for many patients, even in cases where the cancer has spread.
The testicle contains different cell types. Cancer can originate from any of these. The specific cell type determines the tumour classification and influences treatment decisions.
