A vacuum erection device (VED), also known as a vacuum constriction device or penis pump, is a medical device designed to help men achieve and maintain an erection. The device works through a straightforward mechanical process that draws blood into the penile tissue.
The device consists of three main components:
- A clear plastic cylinder that fits over the penis
- A pump mechanism (either manual or battery-operated) that creates negative pressure
- A constriction ring (sometimes called a tension band) that maintains the erection after the vacuum is released
When you activate the device, the pump removes air from the cylinder, creating a vacuum effect. This negative pressure causes blood to flow into the sponge-like regions within the penis that fill with blood during an erection. Once you achieve an erection, a constriction ring is placed at the base of the penis to prevent blood from flowing back out, maintaining firmness during intimacy.
Vacuum erection devices have been used for decades to address erectile dysfunction resulting from various causes (such as diabetes, prostate surgery, cardiovascular conditions, and psychological factors). They represent a treatment option that avoids systemic medication and surgical intervention.
